The Visual Story (03/26/08)
ASSIGNMENT 8 (Due April 2)
BOOK CONCEPTS
The class will now transition toward working as a group design studio. For next class each member will pitch several ideas for a final book project.
PART ONE – Book manufacture
Refer to the specs on Lulu.com. Select the most effective materials, size and page orientation (vertical / horizontal) for each of your book concepts. Use 48 pages as a basic starting point. If you have a specific concept that requires a different page count, explain why.
PART TWO – Book concepts
Present ideas / concepts for (visual) books that people would want to buy. This is a ‘pitch’. You will present your ideas to the class, and as a group we will all choose which concepts we want to develop as final projects.
• Present at least one book concept for your own brand story.
• Present at least one concept for the brand you chose from last week’s assignment.
• Present at least one concept for any brand story (from the class) that will make a desirable book.
Do not limit yourself to the minimum requirements above–if you have 10 good ideas, present all of them. The important thing is to come up with concepts that are desirable (that people will want to buy). If your concept is inspired by something, make sure to bring that thing to class.
Questions to consider:
• How is the book concept related to the brand story–does it expand on an idea we already know or does it present a new focus for the brand?
• What book size, shape and layout style best supports the overall concept?
• Why would someone want to buy it–does this book idea already exist?
WORK DUE
You will present your assignment via the class blog. Be sure to post your work on the blog BEFORE class.
